Project Description:

The Tanzania’s economies and livelihoods are weather dependent. The weather variation affects agriculture, transport, communication and Industrialization. For example, for the case of agriculture (mainly rain-fed of Tanzania), inadequate rainfall can lead to crop failure and famine while too much rainfall can cause floods causing lots of fatalities to structural designs, disruption of ecology and environments, like explosions of epidemics and famines, to name  (but) a few. Thus, to avoid such problems, weather forecasting is important for determining the future climate expectations.

Dar es Salaam, the biggest city in Tanzania, depends on rain water for various daily activities. It’s rainfall climatology has some changes which need to be taken into account while planning for activities. In order to forecast the rainfall over a given period, various mathematical and statistical methods have been used. In this project, an intern is expected to review the existing methods and apply to Dar es Salaam rainfall data collected by Tanzania Meteorological Agency (TMA). Also, an intern will come-up with a model that best fits the rainfall data. Therefore, a better understanding of the Dar es Salaam rainfall data, a better modelling and estimation, and, finally, a better forecasting performance is the main goal of this project.
