Project Description:

The Rwanda Air Quality and Climate Change Monitoring project, is a joint project between the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) and the Ministry of Education (MINEDUC). The Key objectives of the project are:

  1. To establish an air quality monitoring system in the country to continuously monitor and report air quality index around the country
  2. To enhance the existing climate observatory (MINEDUC) in order to improve the understanding of local emissions related to climate change
  3. To build capacity of Rwandan scientists and partner institutions staffs to answer air quality and climate related issues in Rwanda
  4. To regularly produce reports and scientific publications and policy guidance related to air quality and greenhouse gases to support national sustainable development.

This work will consist of developing an aerosol source apportionment model from the data of the Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ACSM), under the Assistance and supervision of the Air Quality Sector Specialist and Technical Assistant.

 Intern Responsibilities and Expected Outcome

The Rwanda Air Quality and Climate Change Monitoring Project has purchased an Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor. This instrument provides detailed chemical composition of no-refractory sub-micron aerosol. The data are very useful to pinpoint different sources of ambient aerosol. However, a source apportionment model using positive matrix factorization or related techniques is needed for this purpose.

The intern will use the data from the aerosol chemical speciation monitor that is located at the air quality and climate laboratory located at the University of Rwanda, College of Science and Technology to develop an aerosol source apportionment model to be used for the ACSM data.
