Project Description :
The “Geodynamic of Lake Kivu” (GEODYN) research project will consist in (1) assessment of tectonic movement within and along Lake Kivu (geodesy), (2) assessment of lake water level (geodesy), (3) assessment of SO2 dispersion above Lake Kivu (gas chemistry), (4) evaluation of CO2 emission from the fractures and mazukus along the lake (gas chemistry), (5) monitoring of volcanic activity of the Nyiragongo through SO2 and CO2 emissions (gas chemistry), and (6) the production of a probabilistic seismic hazard map for the Lake Kivu basin particularly in the area near lake Kivu using local geology and tectonic (seismology). The Rwandese partner (INES) will contribute to the “Seismic activity surveying in Lake Kivu basin” (SEISMIC) only, with two main activities: (1) the construction of stations and installation of seismometers and (2) the conduct of seismic data collection and analysis. The Congolese partner of the GEODYN project is OVG. This project will be financed by REG/EDCL/LKMP.
