Project Description :

The research project called “Ecological Functioning of the Littoral zone of Lake Kivu” (ECOLIT) will consist in assessing the functioning of the littoral zone with focus on the potential influence of watershed on the littoral and the pelagic zones of Lake Kivu. To fulfil this objective the following aspects will be addressed: (1) determine the seasonal, spatial, and inter-annual variations of limnological characteristics of the littoral zone of Lake Kivu, (2) assess the primary and secondary productions of the littoral zone and (3) assess their dynamics with respect to the hydrological regime, local meteorological variations and to the limnology of this zone, (4) draw an inventory (Fish taxonomy) and the population structure of the ichtyo fauna of the zone as well as (5) the diversity and ecology of the macro benthic invertebrates; (6) the functioning of this littoral zone will also be compared to that observed in the pelagic zone from previous studies.

This project will be financed by REG/EDCL/LKMP and implemented by ISP/Bukavu (RDC), UR and RAB (Rwanda).
