Through the following profiles we would like to introduce you to some of the many extraordinary alumni of the AIMS PGD programme and the effect it has had on them personally and professionally.

Alumni Profile
Shehu Shuaibu Abdussalam from Nigeria is a 2003 AIMS graduate. He is currently doing his PostDoc at ICTP in Italy.
What did you gain from AIMS?
A lot of things: to mention some - the art and technology in problems solving; both alone and working as a small group, research oriented learning as opposed to the more traditional, almost solely exams-oriented approach, had the opportunity to meet lots of other people from most of Africa and outside Africa and learn from their ways of thinking or looking at things/issues, analytical thinking and approach to questioning... scientific and to some good but lesser extent political as well.
How did your education at AIMS prepare you for your current job/studies?
The course and what I learnt were very crucial and form part of the most important foundations on which my carrier is being built. I got introduced into the subject area on which I am currently doing research about. It prepared me to be able to follow more advanced courses and the techniques I learned there were very useful for my PhD research.
What advice would you give to today’s students?
Make best use of the opportunity. Interact with your colleagues, lectures, tutors and all you can, as much as possible. Discuss with one another, ask questions, answer questions, enjoy learning to think and solve problems and not just for exams. And... well please don't be like myself (if you can)... take some time out and enjoy the fresh air outside the building.
